If you get less than 8 hours of sleep, your day will be terrible
If you get less than 8 hurs of sleep, your day will be terribleIf you get less than 8 hours of sleep, your day will be terribleI am writing this story sleep-deprived on six hours of sleep, with my cognitive functions significantly impaired. Likely, you are reading this sleep-deprived too, because multiple studies have confirmed that our adult brainsneed exactly eight hours of sleep and its pretty hard to get that regularly if you have any type of responsibility. The drumbeat from scientific studies is this 8 hours. 8 hours. 8 hours. Any less and youre not functioning well, even if you fool yourself that you are.Even seven hours of sleep, which is luxury not afforded to many in the medical or journalism worlds of overnights and shifts, will totenstill negatively affect your brain. Losing less than an hour of sleep from the prescribed eight hours made participants in a Walter Reed study three times more likely to doze off than participants who got eight hours of sleep. In a similar two-w eek study, the participants who only slept six hours were acting as if they were under total sleep deprivation after only 10 days of six-hour sleep.10 days. The researchers measured participants cognitive functions after their sleep. The ones who got less than eight hours of sleep were slower to respond, couldnt interpret words as well, and were dozing off more. After one sleepless night, the participants in the zero-sleep group were acting like they were legally drunk. You cant game sleepTheres no way to beat the sleep system. Sleep is superior. Those same researchers also found that we cant catch up on sleep on the weekends. People who slept less than eight hours during the week did not regain their baseline levels of cognitive function after a weekend of recommended sleep.Worse, we dont even recognize when we are sleep-deprived. People in the six-hour sleep group thought they did great on the cognitive function tests, but they performedsignificantly worse than the eight-hour sleep g roup. But naps do helpIf you dont get those eight hours of beauty rest, theres still one other option to help an afternoon siesta.University of Pennsylvania researchers found that a one-hour nap after lunch improved 3,000 elderly seniorsoverall cognition. They could recall tasks better and solve more math problems. Theres even a power nap wheel created by sleep researchers that determines when is the best time to take a nap based on when you woke up.It can be hard in our busy lives to make time for sleep, but study after study confirms that we need to prioritize zzzsto be our most productive selves. And these sleep studies suggest that the reason we are so busy with never-ending tasks might bebecause were too sleep-deprived and tired to be efficient. We need to make sleep a lifestyle, not a habit. One good nights sleep can make us feel like superheroes, but it doesnt mean we can pull an all-nighter the next night. A Reductress headline wryly satirized the sleep dilemmaas How Getting 8 Hours of Sleep Gave Me The Energy to Overcommit Again. After reading these studies, I, for one, am a changed woman. Im going to bed at 1130 p.m. tonight in penance after writing this.

Back to Work Turn Over a New Leaf
Back to Work Turn Over a New Leaf Back to Work Turn Over a New Leaf Something about the temperature dropping, leaves changing and backpacks bobbing up and down outside our windows makes us reminiscent for the start of school. While most of us havent had a first day of school in years (lets not admit how many), the nostalgia remains strong. Why not harness that first-day-of-school feeling and use it to start fresh in your work life? Whether youre beginning a job search or simply looking to freshen up your current job, here are some tips on how to turn over a new leaf. The aufgabe job searchYou know that kick of motivation you feel in the problematik? Well, everybody else is feeling that as well. Competition for jobs is high this time of year, and companies hiring budgets are getting low. On the other hand, many companies are noticing how soon the end of the year is coming and hoping to use up their hiring budget before then. Whether fall is a good time to look for a new job or not cou ld be argued a hundred different ways. Truthfully, that shouldnt be your focus. Use this back-to-work mentality to jump into your job search at full speed, and youll get a job regardless of seasonality. What steps should you take to start a job search? Glad you askedThe basic steps are as follows fix up your resume, network, and use job boards. Without a proper resume, the rest of your job search is pointless. Check out our Resume Writing Guide to help you optimize yours.Follow these easy steps to fix up your resume.Once your resume is perfect, you should focus your efforts on networking. When we say networking, were talking about two different kinds networking in person and networking on social media. You should be doing both. Attend local events or seminars in your field and reach out to former coworkers or mentors to meet for coffee. When networking online, LinkedIn should be your best friend. Take advantage of LinkedIn groups, and consider using Facebook and Twitter to increase your social media networking output.Think of job boards as the friend you call when your best friend is on vacation. LinkedIn is your best friend, but job boards are a close second. Research job boards and pick out two or three that you prefer. Check in on those job boardslike every good friend shoulda few times every week to landsee if any new jobs catch your eye. Each time you apply for a new job, customize your resume for ATS.Freshen up your work lifeWhat about those of you who love your job but also love fall? Jobscan can help you take advantage of starting fresh as well. After all, loving your job does not mean you dont get bored from time to time (or everyday). To figure out how you should start fresh, break down your daily schedule.Ask yourself, what are a few of the things I love about my daily schedule? Those are the things you should leave alone. Then ask the inverse, what are a few of the things I dont love about my daily schedule? Can any of those tasks be delegated to s omeone else or removed completely? If not, move your schedule around. One of the hardest parts about having the same job for a long time is the monotony that can ensue. If you normally do a certain task that you dont like in the morning, change it to the afternoon. Just that tiny change in habit can breathe fresh air into your daily routine.Networking is often associated with finding a new job. However, networking can be useful to those who are happy with their current jobs as well. One way to improve our work life is to learn more about the field you work in. By networking with other people in your field, both online and in person, you will pick up new knowledge and be even better at what you do. Networking is also great for building up your client base, meeting people who could join your team, developing side projects and preparing for a future job search. All of these aspects will make you happier in your day-to-day work life. The infographic below shows the steps of in-person ne tworking. One thing is for sure, whether you are searching for a new job or sticking with your current job, the inspiration brought on by the crisp fall air should not go to waste. Take charge of your work life the way you used to take charge of the first day of schoolwith positivity, excitement, and high hopes for the year ahead.

These are 9 signs you might have an ambivert personalityThese are 9 signs you might have an ambivert personalityIm sure youve been asked many times whether youre an introvert or an extrovert. For some people, its an easy choice, but for most of us, its difficult to choose one way or the other. Its hard to choose because the introvert/extrovert dichotomy reflects a tired and outdated view of personality. Personality traits exist along a continuum, and the vast majority of us arent introverts or extroverts we sache somewhere in the middle.Personality consists of a stable set of preferences and tendencies through which we approach the world. Personality traits gestalt at an early age and are fixed by early adulthood. Many important things about you change over the course of your lifetime, but your personality isnt one of them.Always be yourself, express yourself, have faith in yourself, do not go out and look for a successful personality and duplicate it. Bruce LeeThe continuum between i ntroversion and extroversion captures one of the most important personality traits. Its troubling that were encouraged to categorize ourselves one way or the other because there are critical strengths and weaknesses commonly associated with each type.Adam Grant at Wharton set out to study this phenomenon, and his findings are fascinating. First, he found that two-thirds of people dont strongly identify as introverts or extroverts. These people (aka, the vast majority of us) are called ambiverts, who have both introverted and extroverted tendencies. The direction ambiverts purple drank toward varies greatly, depending on the situation.Think of introversion and extroversion as a spectrum, with ambiversion lying somewhere in the middleAmbiverts have a distinct advantage over true introverts and extroverts. Because their personality doesnt lean too heavily in either direction, they have a much easier time adjusting their approach to people based on the situation. This enables them to co nnect more easily, and more deeply, with a wider variety of people.Grants research also disproved the powerful and widely held notion that the best-performing ausverkaufpeople are extroverts. He found that ambiverts greater social flexibility enabled them to outsell all other groups, moving 51 percent more product per hour than the average salesperson. Notice how sales increased as extroversion increased, peaking with those who were just moderately extroverted.Grant explained the finding this wayBecause they naturally engage in a flexible pattern of talking and listening, ambiverts are likely to express sufficient assertiveness and enthusiasm to persuade and close a sale, but are more inclined to listen to customers interests and less vulnerable to appearing too excited or overconfident. How Ambiversion Works in the BrainHow social you are is largely driven by dopamine, the brains feel-good hormone. We all have different levels of dopamine-fueled stimulation in the neocortex (the are a of the brain that is responsible for higher mental functions such as language and conscious thought). Those who naturally have high levels of stimulation tend to be introverts they try and avoid any extra social stimulation that might make them feel anxious or overwhelmed. Those with low levels of stimulation tend to be extroverts. Under-stimulation leaves extroverts feeling bored, so they seek social stimulation to feel good. Most peoples levels of natural stimulation dont reach great extremes, though it does fluctuate. Sometimes you may feel the need to seek out stimulation, while other times, you may avoid it.Finding Out Whether Youre An AmbivertIts important to pin down where you fall in the introversion/extroversion scale. By increasing your awareness of your type, you can develop a better sense of your tendencies and play to your strengths. If you think that you might be an ambivert, but arent certain, see how many of the following statements apply to you. If most of them appl y, youre most likely an ambivert.I can perform tasks alone or in a group. I dont have much preference either way.Social settings dont make me uncomfortable, but I tire of being around people too much.Being the center of attention is fun for me, but I dont like it to last. Some people think Im quiet, while others think Im highly social.I dont always need to be moving, but too much down time leaves me feeling bored.I can get s-lost in my own thoughts just as easily as I can lose myself in a conversation.Small talk doesnt make me uncomfortable, but it does get boring. When it comes to trusting other people, sometimes Im skeptical, and other times, I dive right in.If I spend too much time alone, I get bored, yet too much time around other people leaves me feeling drained. The trick to being an ambivert is knowing when to force yourself to lean toward one side of the spectrum when it isnt happening naturally. Ambiverts with low self-awareness struggle with this. For example, at a networking event, a self-aware ambivert will lean toward the extroverted side of the scale, even when it has been a long day and he or she has had enough of people. Mismatching your approach to the situation can be frustrating, ineffective, and demoralizing for ambiverts.Bringing It All TogetherTalentSmart has conducted research with over a million people and found that those in the upper echelon of performance at work also tend to be highly self-aware (90 percent of them, in fact). By gaining a better sense of where you fall on the introversion/extroversion scale, you can build insight into your tendencies and preferences, which increases your self-awareness and emotional intelligence. This will help you improve your performance.Thisarticleoriginally appeared on LinkedIn.These are 9 signs you might have an ambivert personalityIm sure youve been asked many times whether youre an introvert or an extrovert. Tips for Serving the Best Resume
Tips for Serving the Best ResumeTips for Serving the Best ResumeHeadhunters match resumes to open job opportunities much like we match food cravings to a restaurant menu when you glance over it, theres either a fit or there isnt one.And just like that restaurant menu, youve worked hard to get your resume in tip top shape as a job hunter, hoping to match your skill set to what a potential employer might be seeking.Headhunters see hundreds of resumes on a daily basis and they skim over them hungrily seeking those morsels that make you stand out from the rest and if they dont find what theyre craving, they move on and dont ask questions. With that being said, its vitally important to keep your resume marketable by avoiding ansicht 5 things that will get your resume passed up or thrown in the trash.Summary paragraphs These are outdated and unnecessary fluff that the recruiter who has the attention span of a goldfish has to wade through. Keep in mind that most summary paragraphs never get read they want the meat and bones of your resume so let it speak for itself.Months Leaving out parts of your history makes hiring managers wonder what else youre hiding. Months matter so include them with every job on your resume. Details matter.Hiding Heres a little reminder you cant hide ANYTHING in todays digital world the truth always comes out so its better to include job gaps, no degree, short term employment than attempt at hiding it. The minute you get caught, your credibility is gone regardless of your explanation.Complicating things If you dump all of your achievements at the bottom or top of your resume, you will lose the hiring managers interest. Time is everything and they dont have time to cross check the jobs youve had with your achievements so make it easy by listing them in bullet points under each appropriate job title. Dont make lengthy paragraphs keep it short and sweet and to the point.Hyping it up Theres nothing more frustrating for hiring managers tha n to have their time wasted thinking theyre calling one type of employee only to find out theyve hyped up their resume to get a call back. Dont make yourself into something youre not And, if youre over 50 dont leave off your degree date hoping to hide it in an interview. If theyre going to discriminate because of your age, theyll do it face to face anyway and you dont want to work for that type of company anyway. This same rule applies to age. If youre over 50, dont leave off your degree date in hopes of hiding it. If youre going to be age discriminated, theyre going to eventually do it on a face to face interview. You wouldnt want to work for that type of company anyways. Dont hurt your credibility by trying to bluff your way into an interview, your achievements and hard work over the years should stand on their own merit. Its a daunting task to send out resume after resume hoping for a call back so dont let your resume cheat you out of a fair chance.
